Shane

Shane, 20, is a basketball player born and raised in the Bronx. He’s been honing his skills and practicing his shooting form since he was 10 years old…and it shows! Shane learned to play at playground courts and sometimes with the NY-based inclusive sports program @keennewyork.

Shane’s work ethic is evident both on and off the court— in his part-time jobs and his help with household chores. Most recently, Shane has helped prepare and serve food and perform custodial work at a senior citizens’ center. When at home, he’ll put clean laundry away, wash the dishes, take out the trash and recycling, and put away groceries. His mother Gloria adds, “But mostly he likes to spend time watching videos and dancing.” Relatable!

Favorite videos include reruns of 90s sitcoms “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “The Wayans Bros.,” and “Martin.” Shane is also a big fan of actors Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, and Kevin Hart. When asked about a dream career, Shane said he’d love to be a policeman, a cook, or a salesperson. We so look forward to seeing where his aspirations take him!

In the meantime, Gloria gives advice to fellow parents:
“Just love your baby. He's just like every other child in that respect. He may need some help, but mostly he needs love, care, and to be treated like he CAN do things.”
She adds, “Don't be afraid to ask for help if and when you need it.”

When asked about something that surprised Gloria about having a child with Down syndrome, she said, “That there are so many of us.”
