Nick
Nick, 31, is a drummer and improv actor from Canton, Ohio. Nick has played drums since he was old enough to hold the sticks, his mother Lisa says. He frequently performed with his father and late brother, both of whom were professional musicians. Nick soon developed a love for being onstage, which led him to resign from his job at the local grocery store to pursue his long-term goals of being in entertainment. He completed an 18-month improv program with the world’s first all Down-Syndrome improv troupe, The Improvaneers, and then began working for Stand Up 4 Downs, the non-profit organization that funds and directs it. He hasn’t looked back since!
Nick’s other hobbies include CrossFit, watching cooking and singing competition shows — such as The Voice and Chopped — and when he needs alone time, taking long walks and bike rides. Before his oldest brother Tim died of cancer, he and Nick enjoyed hiking, working out, drinking beer, and listening to music. Nick has two other sisters, with whom he enjoys going to parties and clubs, and another late brother that he has many fond memories with. Nick and his mother like cooking together, hanging out, and taking their 4 Shih Tzus for walks, and with his father he enjoys working out in the home gym and jamming out in the home music studio. Sports Nick has enjoyed in the past have been basketball, baseball, track and field, and swimming.
Lisa says, “Nick is a very a caring and compassionate human being. He exudes confidence and never takes his eyes off his goals, no matter how lofty. Perhaps it is something that comes with that triplication of Chromosome 21...yes, they may learn things a little slower than most, or physically and mentally mature slower than their typical peers, but more and more, as I travel the country and meet other adults with DS, I see this as a common thread. A zest for life, full speed ahead, no filter....the confidence to go after what you want...a dream career, or a spot on the team...whatever it is and no matter how long it takes - the confidence in themselves to keep trying! Nick’s confidence and accomplishments inspire me every day!”
