Mia

Mia, 8, is a soccer player from Raleigh, North Carolina, and has numerous talents in addition to being a kind friend. She is involved in Athletes With Purpose soccer—co-led by Mia’s parents—Miracle League baseball, and gymnastics, and enjoys participating in Gigi’s Playhouse Raleigh activities. Mia cheerleads at Sonshine Gymnastics as well.

When at home, Mia also likes painting, drawing, doing crafts, playing cards, and board games. She'll often help her mother bake in the kitchen, and when not there will use her play oven. Mia is a big fan of mermaids, dressing up as Elsa, and watching Disney movies. Her two older brothers, aged 14 and 17, are very supportive of her, attending—if not volunteering at—almost all of her activities. They'll often read to her and play with her when at home.

Of all of the things that Mia is gifted at, Shelly says that one of her most special talents is the ability to "forgive others even when they don’t ask for it." She says that "Mia sees the world through a lens that has love, acceptance, and joy written all over it."

When asked about advice for expectant mothers, Shelly said, “Don’t sweat the small stuff. They will ‘get there,’ just at their own pace. They are able and will do far more than you could ever dream. Set high goals and high standards for your kiddo just like you would any other kid. They can meet and exceed those goals, but don’t be afraid to be flexible and know that it’s okay to re-adjust goals on a constant basis. Some things will happen fast while other things may take longer. Have rules, be consistent, set boundaries, and have fun. This world you are about to enter into will be the greatest journey you have ever been on.”

"Mia is just like every other kid. She has likes and dislikes, good days and bad days. Her feelings get hurt too. She gives the best hugs, cares deeply, and will be your friend for life. She is fierce and does not give up."
